About the canoe

The winter bark etching on this 16-foot canoe is based on traditional Maliseet designs, including the “fiddleheads” on the center side panel. In Maine and New Brunswick, fiddleheads are the name given to the young shoots of the ostrich fern, which are eaten in the spring. They are also carry cultural meaning for the Maliseet, and are iconic to them in much the same way as the shamrock is to Ireland. The wide variability of color in birchbark is apparent in this canoe. Note the old-style ends. Inside beam is 28 inches.
