About the canoe
The etchings on this 16-foot canoe, a double-curve motif incorporating ash leaves, was inspired by the birchbark art of late Nineteenth Century Passamaquoddy birchbark canoe builder Tomah Joseph. The night it was finished, a barred owl hooted repeatedly from a tree directly over the workshop, which I took as a nod from the spirit of Tomah Joe, whose personal emblem was a barred owl.
