About the workshop
In July 2009 the
Penobscot Marine Museum hosted the building of a 16-foot traditional Wabanaki birchbark canoe. It was finished over a 2-week period by a group of 7 Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, and Maliseet tribal members with my help on the museum grounds. This canoe, which was named "2009 Boat of the Year" by
Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Magazine, was raffled to fund another birchbark canoe building project at the museum in 2010. When the second canoe, also a 16-footer, was finished in 2010, both canoes were launched together on Penobscot Bay.
