About the workshop
In a project funded by the
National Park Service, a group of
Passamaquoddy Tribal members and friends built a 20 1/2-foot ocean canoe with the help of David Moses Bridges and myself. Most of the work was done at the
Wabanaki Culture Center (formerly the Downeast Heritage Center) in Calais, Maine. The canoe was modeled on the Passamaquoddy ocean canoe at the
Maine State Museum in Augusta. The project was administered by Donald Soctomah, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. There were three launchings held: one at each of the Passamaquoddy Reservations, Indian Township and Pleasant Point; and one in Calais.
